Around the Greens
Fixtures arranged for this week are: March 8. all-day tournaments at United and Christchurch W.M.C.; night tournament at Beckenham; March 10 champion of champions fours; March 11 tournaments at Hampstead, Belfast, Canterbury, Oxford. Papanui and R.S.A.; March 12. night tournaments at Beckenham and Sydenham; March 13, night tournament at Cashmere; March 14, allday tournaments at Christchurch and Mona Vale, night tournaments at South Brighton and Spreydon.
R. A. Wilkinson won the Sumner club's singles title when he beat R. Powell, 2012. on a rather heavy green.
Both F. French and R Green played excellently in the final of the Opawa club's colts' championship* The result was in doubt until the final two heads, when French took the lead to win. 19-16. French will be a third-year player next season, and should be prominent in future championships. Green has played very consistently this season. A first-yea r player he, too, has a fine future. For the second year in succession K. G. Murray won the Opawa club's singles title when he beat R. Allison in the final. Murray is comparatively young, and could repeat his notable performance. The Dallington club retained the Kitchingham Shield when it beat Rakaia in the annual fixture by 142 points to 129 The runners-up in the 1960 champion of champions fours. N. Austin, J. Craven. V. Claridge and L. McKendry 'skip), won the Dallington club's fours championship when they beat V. Lane, F. Coglan, D. Stuart, and E. Greenwood (skip) in the final, 22-13. The Avon club's pairs championship was won by Sheahan and Fallen, who beat Knighton and Goodhew in the final, 23-17. The fours was won by Fullen's team after a close game with a four skipped by Anicich, who substituted for Tyler. A strong team consisting of H. Berry, B Whitman. L. Saunders, and J. Howatson (skip) won the final of the
Spreydon club’s fours championship. Howatson began with five on the first head and D. Edwards's team of E. Milne, J. Stapleton, and A. Edwards never really recovered from the set-back and was beaten decisively. B. Sinclair, M. Sheslock, T. Steele, and J. Edmonds (skip) won the St. Albans club's fours championship after beating S. Robinson’s team in the final. Edmonds’s “front men" outclassed their opponents with splendid play.
Championship winners of the Morrison avenue club for the season are: Fours. C. Gundry (skip), W. Aitken, R. Harrison, and J. Childs: pairs, A. Kilday (skip) and A. E. Maloney; singles. Maloney; colts. E. Eder. The final of pairs was enthralling and continued into gathering darkness. Kilday and Maloney won on the last head from E. Richards (skip) and G. Anderton.
Some par ticul a r 1 y strong teams took part in a two-day tournament to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the St. Albans club. Burgess, from a visiting club, Linwood, won with 61 wins and in the play-off for second place, Sanders (Canterbury) beat Wayland (Rangiora).
The annual fixture for the Hoffman Cup. between teams representing the Canterbury Commercial Travellers’ Association and the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association, will be played on the Linwood green on Sunday, March 11. This trophy is at present held by the R.S.A. team.
