Sound Sale For Good Rams At Ashburton
Good, centime quality runs from well-known breeders met a sound sale at the wool breeds section of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association's annual fair held yesterday. Buyers were very selective and the lesser quality types met a slack to w -:ak demand, with a large number of passings. The Romney section was more spirited and the prices for the best quality rams were on a par with last year and quite good considering the season. Top price of the fair went to IL W. Oakley, of Mayfield, who realised 62|gns for a one-shear Romney ram. sold with a transfer to E. Beatta, of Seddon. Other good quality Romney flock rams realised from 23gns to 33gns. Mr Raymond Oakley, of Ashburton, took the top flock ram price, as well as another single entry at 31gns. R. W. Oakley realised second highest price of the day in the flock rams with 32Jgns A total of 154 pens was entered in the Romney section. compared with 190 last year, and of this year's total about half were passed in. Last year more than half were not sold at the auction. Last year’s top price at the sale was 50gns paid for a oneshear Romney. The Romney sale started off on quite a brisk note, but slumped in the later stages, until at the conclusion, only the very top rams were sought. Top price in the Corriedale section, which was slightly
less than 100 pens, compared with only 30 last year, was 15gns. paid for two pens entered by K. V. Hood, of Somerton. There was a definite oversupply in this section, and only the very best brought bids. More than half the yarding was passed in. most of it not even realising the upset price. Last year's top price in the Corriedale section was 32gns. Representatives of the various firms reported that many sales were made privately after the auction. Representative sales were:— ROMNEY J.
