REASON FOR RESIGNING

No Discussion Allowed

(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT. March 6. The chairman, First Officer C. A. Nightingale (of Oamaru) refused to allow any discussion at the annual conference of the New Zealand United Fire Brigades’ Association at Westport today on the reason for the resignation of the Chief Fire Service Officer (Mr T. A. Varley) After Mr Varley had given an address on the work of the Fire Service Council and fire fighting measures, in which he was critical on several matters. Chief Officer O. L. Harlen (Hastings) asked if it was in order to ask why ne had resigned. The chairman requested the delegate not to pursue the matter as difficulties between Mr Varley and the council had not yet been resolved and the chief officer did not want to enter into any controversy which might prove embarrassing to the association or the council.
