Benefits For Firemen

All brigades should become members of the Accident Insurance Society, said the retiring chairman of the society. Chief Officer G. Grey (Marton) at the annual conference associated with that of the United Fire Brigades' Association at Westport today. He said that 40 brigades of 250 in the parent body had not, enrolled. However, the society’s work had increased considerably. Ten years ago interest earned amounted to £BO but it was now £5OO with £14,000 in the accumulated fund.
Benefits, including the provisions for increases to be considered at next year’s conference, include a rise of 5s to 15s a day for a six-day week, an extended period of such accommodation from 20 to 40 weeks, and an increase of subscription.
It was said that a married man with two children, injured in the fire service would receive £l6 10s a week (including Social Security) under the new proposals.
The 4533 firemen in the society now paying in £1269 a year would increase the income to £1594 if the subscriptions were increased. The following officers were elected: President. Chief Officer N. McLeod (Mataura); vice-presidents. Chief Officer H. J. Irwin (Te Awamutu) and Chief Officer R. C. S. Bush (Blenheim); secretarytreasurer. Third Officer H. L. Warner (Blenheim).
