WARNING TO BATHERS

Pollution Of River

“People have been bathing in the water which comes out of the south branch of the Waimakariri river though they have been told it is unfit for bathing. It is polluted.” said Mr A. T. Bell at a meeting of the North Canterbury Catchment Board.

Mr Bell, who is chairman of the board's rivers control and drainage committee, said persons were reaching the river by a ramp on the south bank on the left of the southern approach to the main road traffic bridge. There had previously been a fence there, but it had been taken down so that shingle could be carted out. The fence would now be put back to stop persons from going to the riverbed. Members of the board’s staff had warned bathers that the water was polluted, but the warnings had been ignored. “We have a duty to protect these people against themselves," said Mr Bell.
