GOLF Tuohy Snatches Lead In Hong Kong Open

HONG KONG, Mar. 4. R. Tuohy, of Australia, shot an unfaltering three-under-par 69 yesterday to snatch a two-stroke lead at the halfway mark of the Hong Kong open golf championship. Tuohy, twice South Australian boy champion and amateur champion, shot precision rounds of 34-35 to add to his six-under-par 65 over the Royal Hong Kong Golf Club's “new course” in the morning for a 36-hole total of 134. Nationalist China’s veteran professional, Chen Ching-Po, shot a blazing seven-under-par 66 to match the club's “old course” record and add to his par-71 morning score for a 36-hole total of 136. R. Charles, of New Zealand, Y. Fuji! (Japan), P. Thomson (Australia) and A. Balding (Canada) tied at 137 to hold third position. Tuohy collected six birdies in the afternoon to add to his eagle and five birdies in the morning round. The 25-year-old New Zealand lefthander, Charles, got
a 34-32 in the morning and 35-36 in the afternoon. Thomson, four times British Open champion, started slowly with 34-36 in the morning but shot a 36-31 in the afternoon. L. Woodward, of Australia, who shot a spectacular eight-under-par 63 to set a “new course'’ record in the morning, slipped to a two-way tie for seventh place on the “old course” with a 37-38 three-over-par 75 for a halfway total of 138. F. Phillips, of Australia, winner of the Malayan open last week, shot 33-35 to add to hia morning’s 34-36 for 138. A field of 72 professionals and amateurs from 13 countries is competing in the two-day Hong Kong open, next to last event of the Asian golf tour which enters its final stages with Japan's Yomiuri Open next week.
