CYCLING D. SWANSTON WINS MATCH SPRINTS

The attraction of the combined cycling clubs' weekly meeting at English Park last evening was the match 500 metre sprints between G Wharehoka (Taranaki) and D Swanston (Canterbury). Wharehoka is the New Zealand professional sprint champion. He won his first title in 1950. and each year since ha* taken at least one national title. He has won 1" national titles. In the first sprint Wharehoka switched Swanston well to hold the lead at the 220 yard mark. Going round the bottom banking he was holding the lead, but Swanston came round him with a great burst of speed to win by half a length. Wharehoka again held the lead at the start of the second sprint, but with a little leas than a lap to go Swanston made a fast jump to gain a four-length lead. Wharehoka could not make up the leeway and was beaten by two lengths. The national Junior sprint champion, R. Vlnsen, also of Taranaki, was matched against the Canterbury junior champlion, F. Hooper. Vinsen bad too much speed for Hooper and won with comparative ease. The amateur team to represent Canterbury at the national

championships next week was matched against the Rest In a 4000 metre teams’ pursuit.
