HALSWELL ROADS

Classification To Be Discussed

Members of the Halswell County Council will meet transport operators to discuss their objections to the council’s application to the National Roads Board to reclassify five roads. In the meanttime the council’s application will stand, it decided yesterday. The council is seeking the classification as grade three roads of one grade two road. Junction road, and four unclassified roads. Glovers. Michaels, Dunbar and Nicholls roads. The grade three classification will impose a restriction on the weight of vehicles using the read and the several transport operators affected have protested to the National Roads Board.

The restriction is sought because the foundation of metal on the roads is not deep enough to withstand the shocks delivered by fast, heavy traffic.

The alternative, temporary speed limits was unsatisfactory as drivers were reluctant to drive slowly, said Mr M J. Clark, the county engineer

A 20 miles an hour limit in Dunbar road was violated many times each day, he said.
