Question On N.Z. Horses 111-Timed

[From the Australian Corresponaent of “The Press”] SYDNEY. On Wednesday morning a Sydney newspa per asked: “Where are the New Zealand winners lately?” On Wednesday afternoon N.Z.-bred horses won the first two races at Randwick. Polaris won th? first, the of seven furlongs; Te Poi, the second, Encourage, of seven furlongs.

Polaris. ridden by W Camer. threaded his way from near last, through a field of 22 just to win after a most courageous and brilliant finish. Polaris is a four-year-old by Re Mars (imp) front Smile and could even now prove a bargain, for he was knocked down to his present trainer. C. C Rolls, for 200gns at the 1959 Trentham yearling sale. Red Mars (imn) premier sire of New Zealand in 1956-57 ana sire of Redcraze (winner of £71.481). Red Jester and others; brother of Deimos, twice premier sire of South Africa and son of Hyperion (six times premier Eng’isit sire), was imported to New Zealand by Mr W R S'ead Smile it bv the Solario horse. St Boswells (imp) Her dam. Mona Lisa, was by Caotain Bunrtjy (imp) She and her dam Phrosa (by Limond. imp) were excellent producers. Polaris has a double cross of Gainsborough blood Breeding Potential

A point of interest in Te Poi is her breeding potential Like Polaris she came from the tail of the field to win courageously She is a four-year-old mare by Dogger Bank (imn). from Celebrated, by the Hyperion horse Neptune (imp.) from Celebrity (imp.) a daughter of Cinna. whose nrogeny have done so much for the advancement of bloodstock in New Zealand. Australia and the United States They include Beau Pere. Ralloch. Gay Shield. Mr Standfast and others imported to New Zealand and whose daughters included Buchna. the grand-dam of Avocat General (imp ) whose New Zealand-bred stock have won in Australia during the year

Dogger Bank (imp ) stock have also been winning in Australia consistently since The Wash won the Queensland Derby in 1954 Dogger Bank (imp) is by Fairway Targui (imp) horses bred In New Zealand are at present upholding Dominion prestige. though Havelock is bavins atrocious luck with seconds. admittedly to the best in this Commonwealth On Saturday at Moonee Valley. Havelock finished brilliantly in an endeavour to ca-’ch the flying Wenona Girl at the end of the C M Qrr Stakes, of a mile The short straight at Moonee Valley has a rise of 16ft from the straight entrance to the winning post. How Havekck courgeously climbed that incline was an evidence of his finishing ability and his strength and courage. Behind Him Behind him finished New Statesman, winner of the Victoria Derby last spring; and Blue Era. which finished first in the A.J.C. Derby but lost the race because M. Schumacher, his rider, grabbed the knee of T. Hill, rider of Summer Fair, which was given the race by the

stewards. Gemstone was fourth in the Orr Stakes.

Should Havelock be brought to Sydney for the £lO.OOO Invitation Stakes at the A J C autumn meeting he should be one of the hardest to beat. The mile at Randwick would suit him admirably, but with due respect to rider Gilders, one would like to see a leading jockey ride Havelock over here.

Messrs Cayleys’ Joliette won the first division of the Huntingdale Mile in which there was a big field, including several improvers likely to do better this coming autumn.

J Purtell. who has been having a lean year, rode Joliette. a three-year-old filly by Targui (imp) from that good brood mare, Granada, of Mr W R Stead’s famous Sasanof stud. Granada is by Alonzo (imp.) sire of Rising Fast. This filly is sister to Cabonne. top-weight filly in the 1957-58 Two-year-old Free Handicap in New Zealand, winner of eight races; and half-sister to Joliette (winner of six races); and the two Australian winners Kent (Moonee Valley) and Trim Look (Randwick).
