Labour-Only Contracts
Sir,—The “storm in a teacup" over the house declared black may yet splash over and stain the cloth. I have a recollection of a law being passed making labour-only contracts illegal, this law. over the years, being honoured only by its non-observ-ance. I also remember the 40-hour week was ushered in with a proviso making it an offence for an employee to carry on his trade during the week-end for another employer. Is Mr Langley concerned about men taking their tools from the job on Fridays to carry on their Saturday and Sunday labouronly contracts outside their usual employment? How "black” can you get in this country? Roof tilers paid by the square, lathers by the bundle, shearers by the 100. Union secretaries would do better if they could line up employers who pay 8s and charge from £1 to 25s an hour for employees.—Yours, etc..
