Protection Of Food

Sir,—l have been shocked lately while shopping to see I the number of flies that are allowed to walk all over the unwrapped foods for sale The other day I walked quite . a long way to the butcher’s j shop only to see four or five [ flies buzzing round in the 1 window. 1 did not buy any I meat. Many grocers have I buns and bread rolls for sale iin their shops, and quite [ often they are uncovered. I bought some bacon the other I day from a well-known shop and when I got it home there were flies’ eggs all over it I took it back the following day and complained about it. only to be told that accidents could happen. These accidents should never happen and I think our Health Department should have a good look at the actions taken by shopkeepers to prevent flies from walking all over the food for sale and contaminating it with disease. —Yours, etc., HOUSEWIFE. February 8. 1962. | [The Medical Officer of .Health (Dr. L. F. Jepson' [ said: “Fly-proofing of I butchers’ shops is being iundertaken at the insistence |of City Council health inspectors. The standard of food i hygiene is as good as the I public demand, and the more 'the public insist on higher [standards the better the i care.”]
