Kennedy Has Armed Guard In Djakarta
(NZ.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright) DJAKARTA, February 13, The United States Attorney-General (Mr Robert Kennedy) drove through Djakarta last night under a guard of battle-garbed Indonesian troops armed with sub-machine guns and rifles with fixed bayonets.
Along the route from the airport to President Soekarno’s freedom palace, antiAmerican slogans—“ Kennedy Go Home.” “Indonesia Yes, America No,” “America, the Friend of the Dutch”—had been white-washed over by city workmen.
The slogans, three feet high Ln red and olack paint, were plastered over buildings on Sunday night. Last week students stormed the United States Embassy over American policy on the Dutch-Indonesian New Guinea dispute and broke every pane of glass in the front of the building Speech at Airport
Mr Kennedy, speaking at the airport, said. “I have come to Indonesia as an offi cial oi my Govemmen’ bringing greetings to the Indonesian people and to President Soekarno from the people of the United States and President Kennedy ’’ Djakarta garrison authori ties announced that they in tended to take every precau tion to guard Mr and Mrs Kennedy during their stay in Indonesia and troops were on
the streets nearly five hours before the delayed jet aircraft carrying the President’s brother touched down. Mr Kennedy was greeted at the airport by the Attorney-General (Mr Gunawan).
After telling reporters how glad he was to be atarting his tour, Mr Kennedy drove to President Soekarno’s palace, where he will be staying, and then to the United States Embassy for a briefing by the Ambassador (Mr Howard Jones) and senior members'of his staff
