HYSLOP THIRD IN CAR RACE
Narrow Win For Brabham (N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) BRISBANE. Feb. 12. A. Hyslop, of New Zealand, was third in the international 45-miles car race at Lakeside. near Brisbane, yesterday. The race was won in 30min 50sec by J. Brabham (Australia) by only a second from R. Stilwell, also of Australia. The other New Zealand competitor, B. McLaren, withdraw with gearbox trouble in the eighth lap. Brabham and McLaren set a lap record of 59.95ec. R. Flockhart, of Scotland, crashed in the twentieth lap. but was unhurt. Fourth in the race was X. Davidson, of Melbourne; J. Youl, of Tasmania, was fifth; and then the Italian driver. Bandini. Brabham's time for the event. 30min 50sec. gave him an average speed of almost 90 miles an hour. McLaren was the unluckiest driver in the race In the eighth lap, just as he was about to challenge Brabham for the lead, he stripped a gear and was forced to pull out. Flockhart badly damaged his car when he crashed coming out of a bend in the twentieth lap, but he was not hurt. A. Glass, of Sydney, also ran off the track during the event, which was watched by about 8500 people. After completing a lap of honour. Brabham was taken by helicopter from the track to Brisbane airport in time to catch a plane on the first stage of a flight back to England. McLaren and Hyslop are to compete on the new Sandown track in Victoria next month.
