Crowded Buses

Sir, —Many thousands of citizens who travel to and from the city will derive small comfort from the assurance of the general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board that there are few standing passengers beyond the first section from the city. As they sit back and relax in their imaginary seats for the rest of the journey they will no doubt contemplate with equanimity the announcement in your paper of February 2 that an approach is to be made to the Government for authority to increase the standing passenger limit to 66 2-3 per cent, of the seated load on municipal buses. Will Mr Fardell please answer the question posed by a previous correspondent as to who accepts responsibility in the event of a disaster, and whet steps he has taken officially to advise his traffic staff that the present 50 per cent limit be rigidly enforced?—Yours, etc.. THE DOC. February 12, 1962.
