Alcohol
Sir, —A correspondent recently wrote to “The Press” about harmful preservatives in cheese; but few are likely to eat enough cheese to get any harmful effects. On the other hand, according to my old school book of last century, alcohol is very injurious to the system if taken in large quantities: but with the exception of Mr Miles few correspondents warn people of the danger of becoming alcoholics; or getting into trouble through over-indulg-ence in liquor. The old book says that the penetrating power of alcohol is so great that if habitually taken in excess there is no organ or function which it does not injure. One day last week in the court news there were 14 cases and 11 of them were due to drinking. Money wasted on drink could be put to better use.—Yours, etc., THINK IT OVER. February! 13. 1962.
