Wasps To Be Sent From N.Z. Today I (N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 29. ’ Three hundred wasps, of the species Ibalia, will be s sent by plane to Melbourne 1 tomorrow to help to combat the Sirex pest which has : infested a section of the Vic- ) torian. radiata pine forests. r The wasp lays its egg in the ? egg of the Sirex and thus r kills it. s The consignment is being 1 provided by the Forest Research Institute at Rotorua . which, as well as keeping a J close watch on the developr ment of New Zealand’s exotic forests, carries out a pro1 gramme of insect research I and breeding of control paraI. sites. s A further consignment of _• two other types of Sirex parasites is planned. One of - these species will be of the s Rhyssa family, the larva of ? which feeds on the Sirex larva.
