Latest Cottons In London Displays
IBy
ZALIA THOMASI
The many synthetic fibres flooding the market during the last few years have been a direct challenge to that old favourite, cotton. However, the new weaves and textures shown recently in London lift cotton right out of the “Cinderella” class. Gone are the shapeless summer cotton dresses made from dull uninteresting fabrics and in their place are textured cloths, many with the look of silk or wool, which are easy to wash and cool to wear. Several Categories Cotton is now divided into several categories. There are piques in basket weaves, cords or checks, suitable for tailoring and used with great effect in an ensemble of coat .skirt and toplet in a brilliant white. Cotton lawn is a light sheer with the look of chiffon. There are woven cottons similar to men's striped shirtings; embroidered cottons, either woven into the material or applied later: unconventional cottons with a
worsted or tweed look: cotton lace, either printed or knitted; superfine cottons, and sea-island cottons in abstract prints or near-checks. Leisure Wear Cottons for leisure include terry towelling and denim for beach and resort clothes, as well as West African prints in bright colours and designed with the West African market in mind. Cotton for summer evenings includes Chambrays and voiles, the latter used for a magnificent ankle - length draped sheath evening gown in scarlet and orange with a full overskirt.
