Bolton Heads Both Lists

Recalled to the Canterbury team after the second match, B. A. Bolton, the former New Zealand opening batsman, performed consistently well to head the side’s batting and bowling averages for the 1961-62 Plunket Shield series. His first innings performance of seven -wickets for 23 runs in Canterbury’s final match, against Central Districts at Nelson, was the best bowling analysis returned by a Canterbury player in the series and,his 90 in the Otago match was, until B. F. Hastings’s 149 at Nelson, the highest score. The consistent Sydenham club all-rounder, D. L. Gallop, Who played several stirring innings for Canterbury when the side was in difficulties, easily headed the batting aggregates. His total of 324 runs, scored in nine innings, gave him an average of 36, a figure only slightly inferior to that of Bolton. J. W. Kiddey, whose leftarm bowling rarely faltered throughout Canterbury’s five matches, took most wickets, 20, and was second to Bolton in the bowling averages. After his belated inclusion in the team, Hastings produced the highest shield score of the summer in the Nelson match. Before hits innings of 149, the best score had been B. A. G. Murray’s 133 for Wellington against Central Districts. The batting and bow-ling averages of the Canterbury players were:— BATTING
