HOLIDAYS FOR CHILDREN
Social Services
Council
Kitsets of battleships, crosswords and other models made by United States servicemen who spent last winter in the Antarctic helped to occupy the 24 youngsters who spent a week's holiday at Woodend youth lodge from January 10 to 17. The camp, which was arranged by the Anglican Social Services Council, gave a holiday to five families, including mothers, who could not otherwise have afforded either, the money or the time for one. Besides indoor activities for wet days, the camp director. Mr M. R. McGregor, and his assistants, Mr G. Inwood and Miss R. Williams, arranged a programme of picnic and beach excursions. Willing assistance with the usual domestic chores was given by the children who made a game of each one A side effect from this was a new insight into child psychology on the part of the mothers who absorbed methods of getting children to work and play with eacn 'other with a minimum amount of friction. | As well as the holiday camp, the Social Services (Council arranged for about *4O children from the cottage homes and foster homes to spend the school holidays in tbe homes of parishioners.
Most of the children are with country people and were able to experience a proper family Christmas.
