TROTTING Dandy Briar Now On 4.29 For Two Miles
Dandy Briar graduated to a 4min 29sec mark for two miles wfien he won the South Canterbury Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting at Washdyke on Saturday. He will now be eligible for richly-endowed races in Canterbury in the next few weeks, including the £llOO New Brighton Cup. In the meantime he has been entered for races at the Forbury Park meeting, which will open next Saturday. Dandy Briar will encounter much stiffer opposition now', but his form in recent months has been so impressive that this should not trouble him.
Dandy Briar has won over all distances tlQis season and from 14 starts. has had six wins and two placing* worth £2318 He has not been an easy horse to train and in some of his races has broken for no apparent reason However, he appears to be more solid now and should show further improvement under the guidance of his Belfast trainer, C. S Donald, who prepares him for Mr J Steel, of Greymouth Dandy Briar was prepared by his owner for his racing last term and had 11 starts for one win and two placings His first placing was at the Nelson winter meeting where he lost a tremendous amount of ground and finished fast for second to Smoke Screen 'n spite of another slow start he beat the promising Safe Return by four lengths over 10 furlongs later the same day. Then he finished third to Axis and Smoke Concert over two miles on the second day Dandy Briar joined Donald's team soon after that meeting and showed marked improvement quickly One of the best oi his six wins was at the New Zealand Cup meeting in November when he beat Stormont most impressively at the end of a fast-run two miles in 4min 18 l-ssec Then, at a start before his win on Saturday, he beat Johnny Thunder by two lengths over 10 furlongs at Addington on January 2. Slow Start Dandy Briar’s win on Saturday was also a splendid effort. He was one of the slower beginners after starting from 24 yards and at the end of six furlongs was almost 50 yards from the leaders Soon after the pace slackened and Dandy Briar improved sharply to be close to the lead with six furlongs left. He was a clear leader at the half-mile and from then on did not look like being tested He w'as under a hold at the straight entrance and did not have to be driven out to beat Mary Mavis by three lengths. Dandy Briar is a five-year-old gelding by the imported horse. Garrison Hanover, which sired two other winners in Fairy Herald and C mntess Hanover at Washdyke oi. Saturday The stock of Garrison Hanover have enjoyed considerable success in recent weeks and Dandy Bria should help place him high on the sires’ list at the end of the season. Aloysius. the dam of Dandy Briar, was a moderate win-
ner a few years ago. taking a record of 3min 36 4-ssec for 13 furlongs. She was by Grattan Loyal from Huia Potts, by Jack Potts. Aloysius left Weekender to Dillon Hall, but site did little of note. Her next live foal. Falsehood, by Fallacy, has shown outstanding form this season He has had three wins, the most important of which was the A hburton Cup. in which he outfinished Maharaja. As well as Aloysius. Huia Potts left winners in Sandbird. Triple Play Dealer's Choice and Arriba Triple Play and Dealer's Choice showed useful form in New Zealand Later they were sold to Perth where their form was outstanding Other winners from this family include Sir Julian. Native Cord, Golden River. Dew Heath. Signal Light. Sue Scott. Crofter. Court Martial and King Oliver. Raced Poorly Blue Prince failed to flatter his supporters in his two races at Auckland on Saturday He broke badly in both and was never near the lead The Hal Tryax five-year-old was the 3'3 favourite in the Pezaro Memorial Handicap and the 2'2 favourite in the Freyberg Handicap
Smart Effort Deep Lead finished with a great run for a close third to Winona and Hancove in the Geraldine Handicap at Washdyke on Saturday. He drew No. 1 at the barrier, but gave trouble before the start and was sent to the outside. He made a good start and was seventh when the field settled down. However, he appeared to meet trouble in the middle stages and was not in the first eight racing to the straight It was late in the race when he put in an appearance and at the finish he was closing rapidly. Deep Lead is racing most generously at present and could be an early winner. Won £1290 Morano Boy advanced his winnings since December 16 to £1290 when he won the Winchester Handicap at Washdyke on Saturday He has now won at his last five starts and looks set to win several more races before ’he end of the season. The Morano—Trouble gelding is raced on lease by Messrs I Roberts and H. E. Dunlop, of Christchurch, from the Yaldhurst trainer. A. Holmes.
Morano Boy ran out a most decisive winner on Saturday and looks likely to develop grand staying form. He looked to have lightened up on Saturday compared with his appearance on the first day of the meeting and could be starting to feel the effects of racing and travelling. Three On End Lavengro gained his third successive win since being trained at Otahuhu by J Butcher for Messrs W Bavlev E Walker and C D. May when he beat Loyal Parade and Takitimu in the Pezaro Memorial Handicap at Auckland on Saturday Lavengro wa« raced on lease from Mr W A Newton, of Akaroa. for his first two wins, but he was purchased at a comparatively low figure on January 12 Lavengro has now won £2715 since being trained in the north When trained in Canterbury he won slightly less than £3OOO He is an eight-year-old gelding by U Scott from Sea Gypsy, the dam also of the New Zealand Cup winner.
