35 STREETS IN COMPETITION
Judges To Decide Best Next Month Thirty-five streets in 11 suburbs have been selected for the preliminary judging on February 1 of the Christchurch Beautifying Association's best street competition The judges (the Mayor. Mr G. Manning, and a city councillor), will select three streets in each district for the final judging on February 6 by the Director of Parks and Reserves (Mr H. G. Gilpin) and his staff. A special plaque “for the premier street of Christchurch” will be awarded to the winning street. Entries are:— St. Albans And Shirley.— Massey crescent, Mersey street, Severn street, Ferguson avenue, Carrington street, Lingard street. Mathias street, Jacob street, Gossett street. Papanui.—Condell avenue (portion from Matsons road), Urunga avenue, St. James avenue, Brenchiey avenue College avenue. Hudson street. Jennifer street (part). Beckenham. Opawa. Woolston And St. Martins.— Koromiko street (portiin) Ryan street, Bradford avenue, Roxburgh street, Thomas street. Spreydon, Addington And Somerfield—Hinemoa street Winsor crescent. Darley street, Stenness avenue, Cooke street, McCombs street, Everard street, Therese street, Diamond avenue. Waimairi. —Royds street, Wayside avenue, Joyce crescent. Wai-iti terrace, Willowbrook place. Retrial For Beck.—The Court of Appeals has ordered a retrial for the Teamsters’ Union leader, Dave Beck, who was convicted in 1950 on a charge of evading 243.000 dollars taxes on money borrowed or embezzled from the union. Beck had been sentenced to five years' imprisonment.—San Francisco, Jan. 22.
