Indoor Soccer 500 WATCH MATCHES
Play At Cowles Stadium
Indoor soccer made a spectacular first official appearance in Christchurch last evening at the W J. Cowles Stadium It attracted more than 500 spectators. Each team consists of five players, but the ball may be rebounded off the walls, thus making the walls virtually extra players. The player* are not permitted to kick the ball higher than 3ft from the floor, and heading is forbidden. The goal is 3ft by 10ft. Christchurch City and Rangers opened the programme and took almost the entire first half of nine minutes to settle down. However. their leisurely pace was no indication of the frequently spectacular encounters to follow. Nomads and Shamrock fought out a hard match. P. Rennell, the Canterbury captain. and I McCallum being prominent for Nomad® and W. Yates playing well for Shamrock. and the thrilling firstround matches reached a climax with a scintillating match between Technical Old Boys and High School Old Bovs. Both sides fielded extremely fit players who played - ' as a team. Passes Sped along the floor to players in prearranged positions, while defenders functioned as a unit to frustrate attempts to goal. With the score level at 4-all. the teams finished the match to prolonged applause. Another closely contested match began the second half of the programme. Neerlandia’s narrow defeat of City. 3-2. again brought the crowd to its feet, clever play bv J. Feringa and D Scoble (Neerlandiai and B. Rumbold (City') being generously applauded Showing superior combination. Shamrock beat a radically changed High School Old Boys team. 3-2. The former Canterbury goal-keeper, .1. Callaghan, did more than his share in stopping Old Boys from scoring. In the final match of the evening. Technical's smooth passing from man to man and from one end of the hall to the other had Rajigers completely baffled. Technical scored almost at will, and the'final score of 8-2 reflected the merits of the teams. Results were:— First Round Christchurch City 6. Rangers A 5 <R. Bruce 2. E Bennett 2. G.
