DURHAM STREET CROSSING

Alternative Access To Be Sought

Interested organisations will meet soon to put views before the Christchurch City Council on alternative access over Moorhouse avenue to the south of the city, consequent on the closing of the Durham street railway crossing. A flyover and a third overbridge have been suggested. This was reported at a meeting of the council of the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association last evening by the president (Mr R H. Stewart).

“Anybody who reads the papers in Christchurch must know there has been a lot of controversy over, the closing of the Durham street crossing,” said Mr Stewart. “At the time of the meeting with the Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) we thought there was a fighting chance of having it kept open, but the Minister apparently received further information on it.

“The various organisations met in December to discuss the Minister's reply,” said Mr Stewart. “It was unanimously agreed to support the Christchurch City Council in the provision of a flyover at the Colombo street-Moor-house avenue intersection, and a third oyerbridge.”
