GIFT OF £2200 PAINTING

Italian Work For Auckland Gallery (N Z Press Association > AUCKLAND. Jan. 22. A 17th-century Italian painting valued at £2200 has been given to the Auckland City Art Gallery bv Mr N B Spencer The painting—an oil on canvas entitled “A nt loco Prince of Syria and Shatom'ca his Step-mother.’’ by Francesco Furini (1604-49)-was publicly hung in the gallery ’oday. Mr Spencer had remained anonymous in connexion with the gift until today when he said he had given the painting because the gallery needed some paintings of its quality for it to be a worthy gallery.
