COTTON MILL
Tasmanian Interest (N.Z. Press Association) NELSON, January 19. Nelson’s loss of the £5 million cotton mill project could possibly be Tasmania’s gain, states a Hobart message K to the “Nelson Evening Mail.” “We would be interested in getting the factory here,” said the Tasmanian Minister for Industrial Development (Mr R. Fagan) when he was informed that the New Zealand Government had decided not to go ahead with the mill at Nelson. However, in the absence of any details and because he did not know the reasons for the project being abandoned he said he could not comment further.
Mr Fagan was leader of the mission which recently toured Europe .and Britain to interest overseas industries and investors in Tasmania.
A number of European and English companies have sent representatives to Tasmania in recent months to explore the prospects of extending operations to the State and have returned impressed by the reception they received. In England Mr Fagan had discussions with Smith and Nephew Associated Companies and he said he was familiar wit’., their operations and requirements.
