ERRORS IN RESULTS

“Tired” Arm On Machine (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Jan. 18. A “tired” mechanical arm on an Education Department punched-card machine almost caused its masters and 117 Christchurch families great embarassment today. Routine human checking on the work of the machine discovered that it had erroneously included the full list of school certificate candidates instead of those who were successful in the pass list for four Christchurch schools.

The list was promptly amended, just before publication. and the fault, in a feed arm, repaired before the machine returns to its normal duties of preparing teachers’ pay data. Next year, the department hopes to have an electronic computer employed at the task of sorting school certificate results. But if only because of the experience of this year, some human checking is still likely.
