EXAM. LIST ERRORS
Computer Slip Corrected
A mechanical fault in the electronic machine the Education Department used to process the results of the School Certificate examinations would have had embarrassing consequences for the department if the errors which the fault caused had not been corrected yesterday. In the official list of successful candidates which was given to “The Press” for publication. four Christchurch schools—St. Bede’s College, St Mary's College. St. Margaret's College and Christchurch Technical College—had all the candidates who sat the examination listed as passing, instead of only the successful candidates.
The hastily revised lists showed that instead of 132 pupils from St. Bedes College passing the examination, only 71 were successful The St. Mary’s College figure dropped from 43 to 30; St Margaret’s College from 67 to 51; and Christchurch Technical College from 59 to 32. Last year 25.000 pupils sat the examination, the highest number ever. As well as candidates sitting in New Zealand, passes were recorded for pupils in Fiji, Rarotonga. Tonga, Western Samoa. Singapore, Rome and Belfast. Northern Ireland.
Colliery Smash. One miner was killed, two were seriously injured and six miraculously escaped injury in a 60 miles an hour collision between trucks two miles ant a half underground in a south coast colliery last night.— (Sydney, January 17.)
