COAT-OF-ARMS FOR ROTORUA
Difficulty Over Design Fee "The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, Jan. 16. The Rotorua Borough Council is finding it difficult, to have a coat-of-arms designed for city status, expected in April. The council applied in September to the Bank of New Zealand for authority to remit £242—the cost of design —to the College of Heralds, London. The bank replied that an import licence was necessary, and suggested an application be made to the Customs Department. On October 18 the Customs Department was written to. The reply said that the remittance was required as a fee for a design and not for an importation. The Customs Department, therefore, was not concerned. On November 30, an application for a remittance was made to the Reserve Bank, and there the matter rests. The Town Clerk (Mr L .J. Wright) is keen to see the matter settled before city status .is proclaimed, for the coat-of-arms will be used on council letterheads. "The college will not consider designing until the fee is paid in advance,” Mr Wright said.
