LONG BREAK AT EASTER

Banks Open On Tuesday (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. January 15. For those who observe the Tuesday as a holiday, a long break is in prospect at Easter this year. Good Friday is on April 20, Easter Monday on April 23. and Anza*- Day on Wednesday, April 25. However, banks throughout New Zealand will be open on Tuesday, normally a bank holiday. By opening that day, the banks would avoid closing on six consecutive days, a bank officer said today. Some post-primary and primary schools may close for an entire week from as early as the Thursday before Good Friday, an Education Department official said. Although it was not a statutory holiday, the Thursday could be observed as such, depending on the wishes and requirements of individual schools. The extra day would be made up at some other time during the year.

The Retailers’ Federation will discuss the matter at the executive's first meeting of the year. It appears likely, however, that stores will open on Tuesday, April 24, although that day is normally observed as a holiday by most shops.
