FIJIANS IN SOUTHLAND
Large Crowd Sees Match (N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Jan. 15. One of the largest crowds ever gathered for a cricket match in Invercargill saw Southland lead Fiji by 108 runs at stumps on the first day of the two-day match at Invercargill today. Fiji's innings closed shortly after the resumption of play in the afternoon at 142, and at stumps Southland’s last wicket fell with 250 runs on the board.
By far the brightest innings wau the 130-minute long Fiji effort. The opener, N. Apted topped the scoring of the day with a well-timed 67 runs. Southland’s innings although slower, produced more impressive individual scores W Robertson, playing dull cricket for a start, was finally out leg before with 56 runs With N. R Thompson (40) he put up 63 in a fifth-wicket stand.
