(NZ. Press Assn—Copyright) SYDNEY. Jan. 11. The Wimbledon champions. N. A. Fraser and R. Emerson today defeated the Indian* P. Lail and J. Mukerjea 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in a national doubles quarter-final at the White City courts in Sydney after being refused spikes. Light rain fell throughout the match and early in the second set Emerson asked to be allowed to wear spikes. The Indians were leading 2-1 after having loat the first set. when Emerson decided the court was greasy. The referee after inspecting the surface ruled against hi* request. The American. Miss D Hard, with the Australian. Mrs M. Reitano. who won the Manly seaside tournament earlier this month, paired for a good win over the Australians, Miss J. Lehane and Miss L. Turner in a semi-final of the national women’s doubles championship. Both players volleyed brilliantly for an 8-6, 6-4 win. England's left-hander. R. Taylor, played in two successive matches on the centre court today. Taylor and hi* partner, W. Coghlin, of Australia, were defeated in straight sets by the Australians K. Fletcher and J. Newcombe 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in a men’s double* quarter-final. Taylor then partnered Miss Hard in a mixed doubles quarter-final to defeat Coghlin and Miss J. Blackman, of Australia, 7-5, 6-1.
Continuing rain washed out the programme of matches set for tonight, under lights. These matches now will be played tomorrow afternoon and play also will be held tomorrow night as scheduled. The tournament committee has now listed an extra night’s play on Saturday to catch up on the programme.
