HOSPITAL’S NEWSPAPER
Production By Patients
Patients of the Goldwater Memorial Hospital, New York, produce their own newspaper twice a month. It is written, printed, published and distributed entirely by men and women who are all suffering from chronic illnesses.
In the 1500-bed hospital patients vary in age from about four to nearly 100. Six of the patients form the staff of the hospital newspaper. At first a New York newspaper printed the hospital publication, but the patients themselves now produce it on a multigraphing machine in the hosiptal’s sheltered workshop. All long-term patients, they have societies and clubs for their hobbies which yield news for the publication. A drama club puts on two or three plays a year, regular debates are held on current affairs, art classes are held and many of the patients p’ay baseball from their wheelchairs. Film screenings and lectures are organised by an auxiliary of volunteers interested in the hospital, who also distribute books from the hospital library.
