Ford In Good Position

L. Middle miss and Mrs Middlemiss (Pukekohe) became the only pair left with two lives in the championship doubles at the South Island croquet championships in Timaru today. They beat A E. Saalfield (New South Wales) and W. B. E. Paynter (Lower Hutt) 26-0 in a second round, second-life match. H. Darby (Timaru) played well to beat Mrs B. A. Jarden (Lower Hutt) in the quarterfinal of the open championship. The first game was all Mrs Jarden’s. Darby only scoring four points. The next two games were closely contested. Darby finally emerging the winner of the three-game rubber. The men’s championship has reached the final stages. H. Ford (Wellington) is in both lives. He will meet Saalfield in one final, and W. B. C. Paynter in the other. In the women’s championship, Mrs Middlemiss is left with two lives, Mrs Jarden. Mrs Salton, Mrs Hight and Mrs Dempsey with one each. Today’s results were:— Open Championship.—Second round: Mrs H. Dempsey (Waimate) beat M. Porter (Alexandra). 26-21, 26-20. Quarterfinal: H. Darby (Timaru) beat Mrs B. Jarden (Lower Hutt). 4-26, 26-20. 26-22. Men’s Championship.—Semifinal of second life: W. B. C. Paynter (Lower Hutt) beat L. Middlemiss (Pukekohe), 26-11. Semi-final of first life - A. E. Saalfield (N.S.W.) beat C. J. Pomeroy (Christchurch). 26-19 Women’s Championship—First life, second round: Mrs W. Walker (Timaru) beat Mrs H. Skelton (Reefton), 26-7; Mrs L. Hight i Morrinsville) beat Mrs C. Bishop (Ashburton), 26-10. Second life, second round: Mrs H. Dempsey (Waimate) beat Mrs A. G. Rawlinson (Methven), 26-19. Third round: Mrs W. L Salton (Oamaru) beat Mrs L. Hight (Morrinsville). 26-22; Mrs L, Middlemiss (Pukekohe) beat Mrs H. Dempsey (Waimate), 26-21. Quarter-final Mrs W. L. Salton (Oamaru) beat Mrs R. Henry (Christchurch). 26-24. Second life, semi-final: Mrs L. Middlemiss beat Mrs C J. Pomeroy (Christchurch). 26-13. Championship Doubles—Second life, second round: Mr and Mrs Middlemiss (Pukekohe) beat A. E. Saalfield (N.S.W.) and W. B. C. Paynter (Lower Hutt). 26-0. Third round: H. Ford (Wellington) and Mrs A G.
