ANTARCTIC TANKER

Chattahoochee At Lyttelton

The United States naval tanker Chattahoochee will leave Lyttelton with nearly a million and a quarter gallons of fuel, for her third and last trip to McMurdo Sound this season, about January 18. She will carry a million gallons of aviation fuel. 180.000 gallons of jet fuel. 50.000 gallons of motor spirits. and diesel fuel. The Chattahoochee arrived at Lyttelton from McMurdo Sound yesterday. The master (Captain P. Gentile) said the voyage was made in rough weather. A party of American scientists. two members of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and a New Zealand naval officer. Lieutenant - Commander J. Lennox-King, returned with the ship. The Chattahoochee last sailed from Lyttelton on December 17. She was escorted by the icebreaker Burton Island from Beaufort Island to McMurdo Sound. Arriving on December 26. she discharged her cargo and left on December 31.

After this trip the tanker will return direct to the United States. Two more Antarctic-bound ships are at Lyttelton. They are the supply vessel Arneb. which should sail today, and the icebreaker Glacier, expected to sail on Wednesday.
