Good Win For Canterbury

(From Our Own Reporter)

DUNEDIN, January 8. Whirlwind batting over the last 10 minutes of play gave the touring Canterbury B cricket team a win by seven wickets over Dunedin Metropolitan this afternoon. _ Canterbury dismissed Otago in the first innings for 156—109 runs behind—and enforced the follow-on. Otago, after losing the two opening batsmen in the second innings in a sensational first over bv the fast bowler, C. R Nicholson, recovered to declare with nine wickets down for 161 runs. Left with 22 minutes to score 53 runs. Canterbury lost three wickets for 12 runs in as many minutes and it seemed as if the win were impossible at this stage. But forceful and stylish batting by M. J. Bear, aided by a solid innings from A. C. Timpson, saw the next 41 runs added in just over 10 minutes to bring the victory. Canterbury's bid to get the runs was aided by the Metropolitan captain. L. D. Smith, who had his fieldsmen moving briskly for the change-overs, and who made sure his bowlers did not bowl wide of the wickets. When play resumed this morning, Otago slumped from 50 for three overnight, to 106 for seven in reply to Canterbury's 265,

but resolute and, sometimes lucky, batting by the tail-enders almost saw the home side avoid the follow-on. The best of the Canterbury bowlers in this innings was W. M. Duncan, whose late swing and ability to cut the ball either way off the wicket troubled all batsmen. Canterbury appeared to be In for an easy victory when Nicholson had both openers back in the first over of the second innings. but top-scorers in Dunedin's first innings. E. A. Watson and M J. Aim. saved the collapse. After they were dismissed it was again the tailend batsmen who came to light. Nicholson and Timpson shared the bowling honours in the innings with four wickets each, the former bowling with more accuracy and hostility than he had shown on the first day. Timpson just fed the ball up to the batsmen and let them make the mistakes. Bear’s unbeaten knock for 27 was a gem. Even though he scored his runs in about 10 minutes. there was no impression that he was taking any risks. He merely waited for the bad ball to come along and there were at least two in every over, and hit them to the boundary. In between he ran some extremely sharp singles with Timpson in order to keep up with the clock. The winning runs came off the second delivery of the last over of the match.
