Northern Batsmen Fail At Hamilton

(New Zealand Press Association)

HAMILTON, January 8.

Central Districts, 138 for six at stumps at the end of the first day’s play in a Plunket Shield cricket match at Seddon Park, Hamilton, had a first innings lead of 35 over Northern Districts.

At one stage, with Central five for 59, it seemed as though Northern would break through, but first D. V. Spence and M. Shrimpton had a sixth wicket partnership of 36, and later Shrimpton and B. Hampton in an unbeaten seventh wicket stand of 53 took Central past Northern’s score.

Taking a while to settle down, Shrimpton and Hampton gradually got the better of the bowling and although the scoring was slow, it was just the partnership Central needed at that Stage. Earlier in the day, Northern’s prospects of a good score in front of its home crowd were shattered by some lively swing bowling by D. Kinsella, who broke through the early Northern batting to have, at one stage, the astonishing figures of four wickets for seven runs off six overs, three of which were maidens. Three were caught and one leg before.

Hampton bowling at the other end did not look as dangerous as Kinsella, but was bowling on a good length and had G. V. Giles leg before and Northern was five for 14. B. H. Pairaudeau and G. D. Alabaster became associated and with them Northern's hopes rose. Both played a mixture of defence and aggression and Pairaudeau, in particular, played some glorious shots. They added 70 runs for the sixth wicket. When these two were out the bottom fell out of Northern’s innings with Hampton, Kinsella and Mummery claiming the wickets.
