High-weight At Kurow Won By Night Sock

“The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN, January 7, Night Sock recorded his best performance since winning the Hack Stayers* Plate at Tauherenikau in August when he outclassed his five opponents in the Domett High-weight at Kurow on Saturday.

He was suited by easing track conditions and as fifth favourite paid £8 ss. Night Sock was at the rear of the field in the early running, but L. D. Stock moved him up to follow the pacemaker, Canon, on the home turn where Interlaken was two lengths back ahead of Julloch, Rustle and Clean Heart. Night Sock was clear soon afterwards and drew out to win by two lengths and a half. The favourite, Julloch, ridden by W. D. Skelton, set out after Night Sock on the turn and although he reduced the lead he never looked like catching the winner. Interlaken was three lengths back third with a length and a quarter to Canon and Rustle and Clean Heart beaten off. AH-The-Way Win Mary Tee led throughout the T. A. Munro Handicap and never appeared in danger of being pegged back. The King’s Command mare gave the Washdyke trainer. E P. Corboy, his second win for the day. She showed improved stamina on her racing over the holidays and as third favourite paid £4 12s 6d. The disappointment of the race was the favourite and top-weight. Persuasive. She raced on the inside of Hunting Melody and Legal Game at the rear throughout and finished last in the five-horse field. R. W. McDonald eased Mary Tee on the turn and Kent, got within a length and a half of the leader. But Mary Tee came away again and was three lengths clear at the finish. Kent easily held Hunting Melody by two lengths and a half with a head to Legal Game and half a length to Persuasive. Top-Weight Easily Tocsin recorded an attractive performance to master the top-weight of 8-12 easily and win the Hakataramea Hack Handicap. Trained at Oamaru by J. C. Hobbs for Dr. T. Jenkins, of Dunedin, Tocsin gave W D. Skelton his second winning ride for the day. A winner at Waikouaiti and fourth at Oamaru she

was favourite and paid £2 6s Bd.

Mosul, Persian Light and Panam were last away. Tocsin followed the leader.Uantana, to the half-mile where Gail and Y arly were next ahead of Ignite. Panam and Magic Flute, which drifted after making a smart beginning. Llaittana was still in front at the furlong, but could not cope with Tocsin’s finishing effort and was two lengths and a half back at the finish. Magic Flute finished fast for third four lengths away with a length to Yearly ahead of Ignite, Panam, Fair Polly, Persian Light, Gail and Mosul (beaten off). Close Finish Natlin left maiden class with a narrow but decisive win over the favourite,. Rose Command, in the Novice Stakes after these two had disputed the pace throughout. Mr C. E. Leighton's Targui mare was ridden by the Wingatui jockey, L. W. Hare, and as fourth favourite paid £9 Is 6d. The start of the race was delayed for 10 minutes when Windsor Castle, which finished third, cleared out at the start and cantered round the track eluding the efforts of the clerk of the course to catch him. Uncierwood Lass broke her bridle and fell when her gear was being adjusted. ’ Crackerjack and Underwood Lass, which started from outside the stalls were slow. At the half-mile Natlin and Rose Command were two lengths clear of Waitohi with Rhythm Girl, West Column, Underwood Lass and Dial ahead of the remainder Windsor Castle ran up to follow the leaders into the straight with another gap to Rhythm Girl and the improving Central’s pride. Windsor Castle was almost in line with Natlin and Rose Command at the furlong, but failed to sustain his effort. Natlin won by a neck with Rose Command holding Windsor Castle by a length and a quarter. Two lengths and a half back came Underwood Lass clear of Crackerjack, Eimacoma, Rhythm Girl, West Column, Booby Trap and Central's Pride.
