FISHERMAN DROWNED

Swept Down Rapids

(N.Z. Press Association) WANGANUI, Jan. 7.

A farmer was drowned crossing the Rangitikei river at the Pinnacles on the Tai-hape-Napier toad, about 40 ■miles from Taihape, on Friday evening. He was

Malcolm Campbell Waylen, aged 48, of Utiku, married with four children.

A companion, Edward Bason, also of Utiku, was also swept down the rapids at that point, but survived the ordeal. He recovered Mr Waylen's body from a deep pool and applied artificial respiration without success. Messrs Waylen, Bason, W. R. Brendon, of Waiouru, and Robert Gilchrist, of Hihitahl, were members of a fishing party which left Taihape on Thursday to fish at the Pinnacles about 11 miles inland from Ngamatea homestead. Messrs Bason and Waylen were crossing the river which had risen with heavy rain.
