CRUCIAL TALKS
Rebels In Morocco (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) RABAT (Morocco), Jan. 6. The leaders of the Algerian nationalist rebellion today began a series of crucial meetings that may well constitute a turning point in the revolt’s history. For the first time since its creation in 1958. the entire rebel Government-in-exile travelled from Tunis to Morocco, the Associated Press reported. After spending the night in the heavily-guarded country palace of Dar-es-Salam. near Rabat, the leaders began meeting top Moroccan officials, including King Hassan 11. The subject of the discussions is believed to be Morocco’s claim to parts of the Sahara, Morocco's diplomatic efforts in favour of the Algerian nationalists and prospects for peace in Algeria. According to some unconfirmed reports, contacts between the rebels and the French have bogged down over such issues as the status of the European minority and the transition period before a self-determination vote.
