Unable To Shift Guns

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Jan. 4.

General Charles Ostram. retired, commanding general of tihe armed forces in the Society Islands during the w>ar, arrived in Auckland in the Monterey this morning on his way to the South Island for a holiday.

General Ostram was in charge of building fortifications on the island of Bora Bora.

He made such a good job of building eight gun emplacements round the cliffs that the French have been unable to demolish them.

The guns, with a 7in bore, came from the battleship Kansas. Each weighed 15 tons, yet General Ostram hauled them up 206 ft cliffs. Each gun took two days to pull to the top. Because of the age of the guns special ammunition had to be made.
