£16,000 In Wages Lost At Pareora

(N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU, January 4. The refusal of about 500 freezing workers to continue killing at Pareora during the Christmas and New Year holidays cost them more than £16,000 in wages. The Timaru manager of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company (Mr W. S. Minehan) set this figure today when commenting on the five days and two halfdays on which the men decliend to work. Both South Canterbury freezing works—Pareora and Smithfield resumed normal killing yesterday. Fireworks Display.—A spectacular fireworks display on the Apia waterfront tonight climazed the third day of Western Samoa’s independence celebrations.—Apia, January 3.
