COSMIC RAY RESEARCH

Building In

Antarctic

The installation of the nuclear power reactor at McMurdo Sound has meant the erection of new buildings to house the delicate instruments used in cosmic ray research.

Mr H. A. C. Neuberg, who is in charge of the cosmic ray research programme, said yesterday that new buildings were being erected about 600 yards from the reactor. As there was a hill between the two sites it was not expected the nuclear reaction would distort readings taken on cosmic rays. Mr Neuberg said the equipment for the new buildings was valued at more than 100,000 dollars.* It was also very sensitive, measurements were made in one-hun-dredths, and the daily readings made consistency essential.

The research is being undertaken under the direction of the Bartol Research Foundation. It is part of a world-wide programme. As well as the station at McMurdo Sound there is a detector at Thule. Greenland, a Swedish ship equipped with scientific instruments also in Greenland, and a MTS ship and an aircraft with instruments in the Antarctic. The findings of these five are correlated and sent to the United States.
