Promising Table Tennis Players
ALTHOUGH the Canterbury and Ned Zealand champion table tennis player. Miss J. 'Williamson, is now living in England, her influence on the game in Christchurch lives on in the good performances of those whom she has coached—the very promising junior members of the Dallington club. Four members of this club —D. J. Kalin, P. J. Wylie, D. T. Mcßride and R. F. Inns—have had many successes in junior play over the last two seasons. In 1960, her last year in Christchurch, Miss Williamson coached extensively at the Dallington club. In the recent junior tournament held by the Canterbury Table Tennis Association these players proved their ability. Kalin won the under-21 singles and doubles, Mcßride the under-17 singles and doubles and the under-21 plate, and Inns partnered Kalin to win the under-21 doubles. Wylie was a semifinalist in the under-21 singles and he and Mcßride were runners-up in the doubles event in that section.
Inns, Wylie and Mcßride are members of the Dallington team which is playing in the A grade in the current summer competition. Their play has progressed with the harder competition. Wylie's wins Include defeats of G. M. Leech, J. Torode and J. M. Gillard. Inns has also beaten Leech and Gillard, and McBride has recorded a win over the steady A. Alabaster. Kalin has been playing in this competition In the University II team, and included in his good performances have been a win over R. McLachlan and an even match against N. B. Radford, ranked fifth in Canterbury. Last winter a Dallington team comprising Kalin, McBride and Wylie finished second in the A reserve grade competition. It would not be surprising to see one or more of these four promising young players in the A grade next season.
