Hunting With The Bow
Sir.—One reads with mixed feelings a report from Hamilton that a Japanese deer has been stmt by a “bowhunter” This particular species of deer is. apparently. small, wary, and “quick off the mark”: and to tha* extent one gives credit to »he hunter armed only with bow and arrow The report however, did not disclose whether the animal was killed outright or had to be dispatched subsequently One of the srst things one learn’ about ahootine game of any kind was to eliminate, as far as possible, the risk of wounding, as distinct from killing outright: even if it meant losing a possible addition to the bag Expert marksmen and stalkers as many bow-hunters may be. it is hard to believe that their weapon affords the same
facilities for rapid and painless dispatch as does a rifle. The fact that deer are vermin should not, in the view of any good sportsman, affect this principle.—Yours, etc . ILAM. December 20. 1961. I
