REGULATIONS ON FISHING
Marine Department Bulletin
The many fishermen who wish to take up their sport while they are on holiday are asked by the Marine Department to keep in mind the current fishing regulations. The department has issued a bulletin showing the type of fish that may be caught over the Christmas period. It is permissible to take four gallons of mussels, pipi cockles, or paua a person. The crayfish limit is 12 a person. 24 for two persons. and 30 for parties of three or more. All female crayfish carrying external eggs and all crayfish less than lOin from the spike between the eyes to the tip of the tail have to be returned to water, alive and unharmed. The daily limit of flounders and soles is 24 a person, 48 for two persons, or 60 for parties of three or more. No person may have more than a limit catch aboard a boat or vehicle, or in his possession. The size limits for fish are: Lemon sole, square flounder or dab, 9in; all other flounder and sole, loin: snapper, tarakihi and trevally, lOin: blue cod. 12in: butterfish. 13in; hapuka or groper 24in Drag nets may not be longer than 44 yards, may only be pulled by hand, and may not be pulled on to dry land when they contain fish. Only one set net is permitted and its maximum length is 66 yards. It is not to extend more than half-way across a channel or stream and is not to be set between poles or stakes, or set in such a way that fish are left stranded by falling tides. There are certain minimum sizes of mesh for these nets. They can be ascertained from the nearest fisheries inspector. Marine Department.
