Franklin Beats Fiji By 70 Runs
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Dec. 20. Franklin beat the Fijian touring cricket team by 70 runs in the last over of the day at Pukekohe today in an unexciting finish. The victory could have been gained much earlier than it was. Franklin, which scored 330 in the first innings, put Fiji ou* for 153 soon after lunch today. If the follow-on had been enforced it would have been surprising if the Fijians could have avoided defeat by an innings. Instead, Franklin chose to bat a second time for a little more than an hour, scoring 74 for six wickets before declaring. The timing of the declaration served merely to prolong the game, as no doubt it was intended to, for the task facing the Fijians was to score 252 runs to win in two hours snd a half. As it is highly imorobable that the Fijians could reach such a total in a full day’s play, the only question remaining was whether the Franklin bowlers could disoose of the tourists’ second inn ; ngs in the time left The visitors were all out for 181 almost on 6 p.m. In this total F. Valentine hit a vigorous half century. Scores:— FRANKLIN First innings .. .. 330 Second Innings R. Wright, b Tavo .. ..3 N. Gibbons, b Tavo .. 9 W. Macmillan, c Apted, b Tavo - - -. 6 J.
