N.Z. Has Fourth Win Of Tour

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) PRETORIA, December 19. Excellent bowling by J. C. Alabaster, whose leg-spinners claimed six wickets for 82 runs in 26.1 overs, helped the New Zealanders to the fourth victory of their tour when they beat South African Universities by 37 runs on the final day of the match at Pretoria today.

With 45 minutes left for play, it looked as if the students—set to score 237 in 260 minutes for victory—had saved the day with a draw when their second innings total stood at 163 for five wickets. M. E. Chapple, however, captaining the tourists in place of J. R. Reid, captured the valuable wicket of K. Weakley (31), who, with R. Falkson (45) had put on 53 in 56 minutes for the sixth wicket. From then onwards the batting crumbled as Alabaster took the wickets of the Last four batsmen for 11 runs. The match, which at one stage seemed to be heading for a tame draw, ended on an exciting note as the students’ last five wickets fell while 36 runs were added in the last 30 minutes of play. The New Zealanders, who took a first innings lead of 21 by dismissing the students for 207 yesterday in reply to their 228, carried their overnight score of 156 for seven to 215 before they were all out. Their innings had lasted 245 minutes. That they reached this total can be attributed to some hard hitting by R. C. Motz. who made 34, and a solid 47 by P. G. Z. Harris. Motz wasted no time in setting about the bowling this morning and while he was at the wicket runs came quickly. His innings—his highest on the tour—included five fours and one six and was compiled in half an hour. He was at the crease only 15 minutes today and knocked up 18 of the 22 runs which came during this period. Harris batted defensively for the most part, coming out to drive occasionally against Seymour, Wesley and Rushmere, who did all the bowling this morning. Harris's innings lasted 136

minutes. He hit four boundaries. Both J. T. Ward and F. J. Cameron played their part correctly in holding up their end while Harris did the scoring. The students never looked like a side striving for victory and the openers, B. Versfeld and A. Me nt er, spent 40 minutes making 23 runs—a partnership which more or less set the pattern for the rest of the innings. Scores:— S.A. UNIVERSITIES First innings .. ..207 Second Innings M. A.
