TWO GRASS FIRES

Dense clouds of smoke drifting across Addington from Sunnyside Hospital caused numerous telephone calls to the Christchurch Fire Brigade yesterday morning. The smoke came from three acres of grass being burnt off by the hospital staff. Fire breaks had been ploughed round the area, but when engines from the Central and Sockburn stations arrived in response to the calls, water was used to dampen the grass when the fire looked likely to spread. Two units from the Central and Sockburn stations attended a grass fire in Avonhead road yesterday at noon. The fire destroyed a small area erf grass behind the airport but did no damage to property.
