ATHLETICS 4 Records At Inter-Club Meeting

Four provincial records were broken and two were equalled at the inter-club meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday. The meeting, which was held over metric distance*. produced some very satisfactory performances in both track and field events, the ■prints and middle distance races especially provided some close and exciting finishes. Miss L. Curtis, one of Canterbury's moot promising young athletes, broke her own record in the under 18 high jump by two inches with a height of sft din; Miss G. Began, a B grade competitor, bettered the under 16 80 metres hurdles record by 3sec. with a time of 12.7 sec; T Freeman exceeded his own record of 52ft sjin in the under 17 shot put by Ift 101 in; and the High Schools men’s junior relay team beat the 4 x 440 yards record of 3min 35.95ec by s.ssec. Those who equalled records were Miss L. Anderson, who ran the senior women’s 80 metres hurdles in 11.7 sec, and Miss C A. M. Rolton, who cleared 4ft lOin in the under 16 high jump. The women's 80 metres hurdles record, which Miss Anderson now shares with Miss J. Shackleton, was established 11 years ago. A. Steel, the University sprinter, won the senior men’s 100 metres in llsec and D Mackenzie, an old rival since school davs, was only Isec behind Steel entered the 400 metres, an event he has rarely contested competitively. but he found Mackenzie too strong over the last stages and was second just ahead of a very determined D Minards. Mackenzie’s time of 49 7sec was a particularly good one. Return of Jones The former Canterbury sprint champion, L. Jones, of Technical, who has just returned from Australia where he has been running the best times of his career, made a brief appearance in the senior men’s 4 x 110 yards relay. He ran second leg and looked to be in very good form, giving his team a commanding lead, which it lost, however, when Mackenzie and Steel ran two extremely fast legs for University. Perhaps the best race of the day was the junior 800 metres in which B. Milne (Marist) and P. J. H Hewlett matched strides in the last quarter. Hewlett led for

the first lap and was past the bell in 55sec, a very fast time indeed. Milne was at his heels and these two quickly drew away from the rest of the field. Three hundred yards from home Milne, who was striding much more effortlessly than Hewlett, made his break which Hew* lett could not answer just then. Hewlett stuck closely behind, however, and at the turn into the straight he made a most determined effort to catch the leader. Milne answered this challenge with great spirit and won by three yards in the excellent time of Imin 56sec Hewlett recorded Imin 56.9 sec.

Miss M. Chamberlain ran a fast 400 metres and, as usual, won by yards in 55sec. which was 1.6 outside the world record. R. Ball dominated the men’s field events with wins in the shot put with 44ft 9J in and javelin with a distance of 206 ft 7}in. P. J. Morrissey, a Canterbury Rugby representative, entered the B grade 400 metres and. not surprisingly, lost to P. Mora who recorded 515 sec Morrissey, who has often beaten 50sec for the 440 yards, has appeared at the park only once before and with more training he should return to his form of previous years.

Mora’s win was convincing. He continues to improve with each appearance In the senior pole vault, C Stricke cleared 12ft 9in which bettered the record by tjin but as Stricke was not an official competitor his height will not be recognised Abbreviations used In the results are: Anglican (Ang.).
