Lord Sasanof Best At Weight-For-Age

“The Press*' Special Service AUCKLAND, December 17. Lord Sasanof sent his Auckland Cup stocks soaring with another fine weight-for-age victory at Paeroa yesterday. This time, going 10 furlongs in the Queen Elizabeth II Plate, he beat off 10 opponents convincingly.

With the luck of the barrier draw against him, Lord Sasanof had to go wide on the outside of Mussetu for a good part of the way. Coming to the straight, his rider, D. J. Wyatt, was able to get him dear by half a length or so and he won by a length.

Lord Sasanof has now been successful in four of his five attempts this season and he was the closest of seconds behind Don Palatine in a sprint at Te Rapa. Besides his latest win he has won the Foxbridge Plate and the Thames Valley Stakes, both at weight-for-age, and a sprint handicap at Ellerslie.

The Thames Valley Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Plate have been decided since the declaration of handicaps for the Auckland Cup but as they are both run under the standard scale Lord Sasanof’s wins have not made him liable for a penalty in the big race. The effort that Mussetu made for second was meritorious and so was Cracksman’s third. Cracksman was a length behind Mussetu after he had given both the first two a fair start from the bottom of the straight. Cracksman is a three-year-old and his run. as a Great Northern Derby trial, looked highly promising. Cracksman and Mussetu are both trained by R. T. Cotter at Te Rapa; but as they run in different ownerships they were not in a totalisator bracket.

.Lord Sasanof was a hot favourite, his win and place dividends being only £1 4s 6d and £1 3s. He completed an on-course double with Jack James (Turua Highweight) of £8 8s for £l. The T-A.B. double, Marwon (bracketed Daysun and Goldmyth in the Hugh Dent Memorial Handicap) and Terrorist (Shaw Handicap), paid £7 10s for £l. The meeting was held in fine weather and there was a large attendance. The track was hard and fast. The totalisator on-course handled £64.750. compared with £60,324 10s last year. Plate Running Ruato, Cracksman, Mussetu and Lord Sasanof (wide) ran almost together to the first turn after about a furlong. Sigh, Woodlore and Lampada were prominent. With a round to go Sigh, Lord Sasanof and Mussetu iisputed the lead. In the next furlong Sigh went ahead by a length from Mussetu, Lampada and Lord Sasanof. Cracksman was close behind and just ahead of Dashing Star and Beauzami.

Near the half-mile Lord Sasanof was running Sigh very close. Mussetu and Lampada were right on their heels.

Coming to the straight Lord Sasanof went: just ahead of Lampada. Mussetu. Sigh. Ruato and Cracksman, r pada and Mussetu then challenged.

Wyatt rode his mount hard and Lord Sasanof responded to win by a length. There was a further length after Mussetu to Cracksman (third), which was clear of Ruato and Lampada. Next were Beauami, Relight Woodlore and Clymon. Results:— TURUA HIGH-WEIGHT, Of £400; about one mile and a half. 1/1 JACK JAMES (13) 9-0 B. L. Hillis 1 3/4 PETERZAMI (4) 9-2 _ _ G. O.
